5 Myths About Intimacy with God

You’ve probably seen it before: a young lady on social media, bowing before God, Bible open, tears streaming down her face. She’s consumed with how much she loves Him, and how much He loves her.
It’s beautiful. It’s cinematic. And yes, it’s fulfilling.

But here are five things they told you about being intimate with God that are all lies:

1. “It’s always a sweet experience.”

Sounds a bit blasphemous to say that relationship with Jesus isn’t always sweet, right? I know.
But walking with God isn’t always a walk in the park. Some days, it feels boring. There are no emotional highs, prayer feels like work, and the scripture you open to makes no sense at all, that’s if you even get a leading at all.
Intimacy with God isn’t always a spiritual “high.” Sometimes it’s quiet, dry, and routinous, but that’s where your roots grow deep and spiritual transformation really happens .

2. “You’ll always be in the mood.”

Ever listened to a couple talk about how they’re not always “in the mood” for romance?
It’s similar with God. You won’t always be in the mood. There will be days you don’t feel like praying, praising, or reading your Bible. But intimacy with Him sometimes looks like DISCIPLINE: showing up at your meeting place whether or not you feel like it.
It’s in those moments that love grows from emotion to commitment.

3. “You’re the one making it happen.”

I’ve discovered that falling in love with Jesus is a work of grace.
The Bible even says that “blessed is the one whom God draws to Himself.” (Psalm 65:4) You might think you’re the one doing all the seeking and thirsting, but it’s really the Holy Spirit stirring you to want more and more of Him. It is Him that draws you to desire His presence above all else. So next time you think it’s your effort making it happen, know that the Holy Spirit is very much involved too, and give Him credit.

4. “Once you’re intimate with Jesus, you’ll never slip up.”

No matter how spiritually high you rise, you’re still human.
In fact, the closer you walk with God, the humbler you become because His light makes your flaws more visible. Suddenly you realize that if He doesn’t help you, you could fall harder than anyone you know.
So when your weaknesses show up, don’t run away to fix yourself. Stay there. Let Him work in you. Over time, your focus will shift from your flaws to His strength.

5. “It doesn’t hurt.”

Oh, it does.
Many people think being close to God means constant favor, open doors, and answered prayers. And yes, those things happen, but that’s just the front end.
Behind the scenes? The Holy Spirit is pruning you, stripping off pride, selfishness, and fleshly habits you didn’t even know you had, and He does it in ways you’d rather skip.
He’ll tell you to bless those who hurt you or do things that make zero sense. And when He corrects you, it stings. But at the core of it all is LOVE. Because when He’s done, you become a wonder to behold

The truth is intimacy with God isn’t just beautiful. It can be raw and uncinematic too, and that’s usually where the transformation happens. So when next your quiet time feels dry or you don’t feel excited about meeting with God, still show up.

Sometimes you have to let discipline lead. Your feelings would catch up later.

Which of these lies have you believed at one point or the other in your journey with God?

I won’t say that I’ve believed any of the lies stated today. However, believe or not, it’s very easy to want to believe that lie that when your intimate with Jesus, you’ll never slip, especially with the world portrayal of perfection and work with God. And sometimes though you know saying it doesn’t hurt is a lie, it’s just harder when it’s starts to hurt and all the questions begin to flood your mind. May God help us to stand up and be steadfast for what we stand for. Amen 🙏

  2. Honestly, we need to have more people putting this narrative out there. As much as seeing pure worship and what being immensely into God’s presence might look or feel like, it is not all there is to it.

This is not to say having a relationship with God is strenuous or rather a form of instilling fear into the heart of those who are looking from the outside and don’t really know what it’s like.

It’s to make everyone understand that intimacy with God isn’t always a bed of roses. Even in the moments where it’s “low or dry”, it doesn’t make you less of a Christian or means God is far away. It’s still all part of the process.

I like your style, Eunice. Sweet and straight to the point.

Number 3 lie is one I used to believe, but now, I see clearly.

    Thank you
